A concrete driveway slab is a consistent moisture environment: the sub-base beneath a slab stays relatively moist through evaporation and drainage, and roots grow toward that moisture. The thickening root exerts outward pressure against the slab edges and from below.
Over time, a root growing beneath a slab can:

A root barrier is a physical membrane installed vertically in the ground between the tree and the driveway to redirect root growth away from the slab. Common materials are high-density polyethylene panels, buried to a depth of 500-800 mm.
Root barriers are a forward-looking measure. They do not remove existing roots under the slab, and they do not repair existing damage. Their value is in preventing recurrence after a repair is done. If you repair a lifted panel but leave the tree in place without any root management, you are likely dealing with the same problem in five to ten years.

Full resurfacing of the affected area: After root management, grinding the affected panels and applying an overlay restores both the appearance and the surface protection of the damaged panels.
