Original finish that was always smooth: Some driveways were finished smooth from the beginning, either as part of the original pour or after an overlay was applied with an inadequate texture. A smooth surface provides almost no grip in wet conditions. Resurfacing with a coarse-texture finish is the right fix.

Sealer degradation: A sealer that is peeling, thinning or has developed a patchy film creates inconsistent grip levels across the driveway. In some spots the surface is rough and grippy; in others where the sealer has pooled or built up, it is smooth and slippery. An uneven sealer is often more dangerous than a uniformly worn one because the grip changes unexpectedly underfoot.

Contamination: Algae, moss, leaf tannin and oil drips all reduce grip on an otherwise adequate surface. These require cleaning rather than resurfacing in the first instance.   • A medium to coarse aggregate in the overlay mix rather than a fine one
  • A stipple-rolled, knocked-down or broom-finish application rather than a smooth-rolled one

Grip additives in the sealer

On a wet driveway, they are a genuine slip hazard because the gloss film is smooth enough that bare feet and even rubber-soled shoes have reduced engagement. How to check grip is holding a year later

Grip can degrade gradually and the change can be hard to notice because you adapt your walking behaviour without realising it. A periodic check is worth doing.

Wet-foot test: After the driveway has been wet by rain or hosing, walk across the gradient (not with the slope, across it). If your feet slide or feel unstable on what should be a manageable incline, the grip has degraded.

Visual check: Look for areas where the sealer has peeled, glazed over or turned smooth. These areas will have lower grip than the surrounding surface. Patchy grip is worse than uniformly worn grip.

Bead test: Pour water onto the dry driveway. If it beads, the sealer is intact. If it absorbs, the sealer has failed and the grip from the additive layer is likely gone too, since that layer is embedded in the sealer film.
