Standard two-part epoxy is the most affordable option but carries known risks on the Coast. Aromatic epoxy (the most common type) yellows under UV, which matters if the shed door is open for any part of the day. Flake or broadcast epoxy systems add decorative vinyl flake to the base coat before a clear topcoat goes on. They look good and hide grime between cleans. Moisture from a slab-on-ground shed floor

Moisture is the most common cause of coating failure on Central Coast shed floors, and it is frequently invisible until the coating starts to bubble or delaminate weeks later.

Slab-on-ground construction is standard for residential sheds. Older slabs may have no damp-proof membrane at all; newer ones may have a membrane that was damaged during construction. The Coast’s combination of heavy rain periods and humid summers means there is often enough ground moisture to cause adhesion failure, even on slabs that look and feel dry to the touch.

A proper moisture test, conducted with a calibrated meter or a plastic-sheet test over at least 24 hours, should be part of any pre-quote inspection. If moisture readings are elevated, options include a moisture-tolerant primer designed for damp conditions, or allowing the slab to dry naturally before scheduling the job. Do not accept a coating applied directly over a slab that has not been properly assessed.

FAQs

Can I coat a shed floor that already has oil stains on it?

Yes, but the contaminated concrete must be mechanically ground and degreased first. Oil that penetrates the slab prevents coating adhesion. Light surface stains respond to degreasing alone; deep contamination may require diamond grinding to remove the affected layer entirely before any system will bond reliably.

My shed slab is cracked. Can it still be coated?

Minor shrinkage cracks are common and usually not a problem once the slab is properly prepared. Cracks that are moving, widening or caused by subsidence are a different matter and should be assessed before coating, as an overlay will not stop an active crack from re-appearing through the new surface.

How long does an epoxy shed floor take to cure before I can drive on it?

Is flake epoxy or a plain colour better for a workshop floor?

Do I need to clear the shed completely before the job?

Yes. Stored items, shelving and bench units need to come out so the floor can be ground, primed and coated in one continuous pass. Partial floor jobs rarely achieve an even bond or colour consistency. Clear the slab fully and allow your contractor to treat it as one complete surface.
