A concrete driveway maintenance checklist does not need to be complicated. A few minutes each month and one or two longer sessions each year are enough to protect a resurfaced Central Coast driveway and push back the next major job by years. Salt air and humidity work against your sealer constantly on the Coast, so regular attention pays dividends that a single annual blitz cannot. This guide breaks down what to do, how often, and what to avoid.
The monthly five-minute rinse and inspect
Once a month, preferably after dry weather when you can see the surface clearly, spend five minutes on your driveway.
Rinse the surface with a standard garden hose. This is not a cleaning session; it is a rinse to dislodge loose salt film, dust and light debris before they can work into the sealer. On beachside streets, salt builds up invisibly between rain events. A monthly rinse removes it before it starts concentrating at the surface.
While the slab is still wet, walk the full length and look for:
- Any new cracking, chipping or lifting at edges or expansion joints
- Any spots where water absorbs rather than beads (an early sign the sealer is thinning in that area)
- Any staining from oil, tyre marks or fallen leaves that needs attention sooner rather than later

Seasonal cleaning: salt film, leaf tannin, oil drips
Four times a year, align with the seasons, do a more thorough clean.
Autumn: Leaf fall is the main concern. Leaves left on a sealed concrete surface leach tannin as they break down. Tannin can stain a light-coloured driveway within days, and the staining deepens with moisture. Blow or sweep leaves off the slab before they have a chance to lie wet. If tannin staining has already occurred, a pH-neutral cleaner applied promptly lifts most of it; left for weeks, tannin stains can be persistent.
Summer: Post-summer is the time to address salt build-up from the hottest months. A warm-water rinse with a mild detergent (pH-neutral) and a stiff-bristle broom will lift the whitish salt film that accumulates on sealers near the water. A pressure washer on a low-to-medium setting (1,200 to 1,500 PSI) is effective if you keep the nozzle moving; holding the jet in one spot on a decorative finish will lift the sealer.
Winter: After winter, check for any moss or algae growth in shaded or damp sections. A solution of white vinegar and water, or a commercial concrete-safe algaecide, treats small patches well. Do not use bleach on a decorative concrete finish; it can bleach pigment unevenly and weaken the sealer.
Spring: Spring is the best time for a more thorough assessment and any maintenance work before the hot months. It is also the best season to apply a fresh sealer if the annual check indicates it is needed.

Annual sealer check
Once a year, do the water-bead test described in the resealing guide. Pour a cup of water in several spots across the driveway. If it beads and sits on the surface for at least 30 seconds in all spots, the sealer is still working. If it absorbs in any area, that section needs attention.
Also check visually for:
- Peeling or bubbling of the sealer film (usually at edges or in areas of maximum sun exposure)
- Chalky powder residue that rubs off on your hand
- Fading in the most exposed sections compared to sheltered sections
On the Central Coast, the annual check often lands earlier than expected. A sealer renewed every two to three years is not over-maintenance; it is the interval that makes sense given coastal conditions.
Small repairs: hairline crack fill, spot resealing
Not every crack needs a professional. A hairline crack less than 1 mm wide with no vertical displacement (no lifting on either side) can be addressed with a flexible concrete crack filler, available from most hardware stores. Clean the crack, apply the filler with a fine nozzle following the product instructions, allow to cure, and reseal the area once the filler is set.
Do not attempt to fill cracks that show vertical displacement, cracks wider than 2 mm, or any crack that has opened since you last looked. Those patterns suggest movement in the substrate rather than surface weathering, and movement cracks need professional assessment before any fill is attempted.
Spot resealing works where a section of sealer has peeled or thinned but the underlying overlay is still sound. Clean and lightly abrade the affected area, feather the edges of the existing sealer, and apply a compatible sealer to match. The challenge is that a spot reseal may not match the colour or sheen of the existing aged sealer exactly; on a decorative finish, this may be visible. What NOT to clean concrete with
This is where well-meaning maintenance does more damage than neglect.
Acid-based cleaners: Avoid anything marketed as a calcium or mortar dissolver, rust remover or tile cleaner that lists hydrochloric or muriatic acid in the ingredients. Acid attacks the cement matrix of concrete and destroys decorative finishes, including stencil, spray-on and exposed aggregate. Even a diluted acid wash removes the fine surface layer that carries the colour and texture.
High-pressure at close range: A pressure washer set above 2,000 PSI held close to the surface strips sealers and, on older or softer overlays, begins to erode the surface layer itself. Keep pressure below 1,500 PSI and keep the nozzle moving.
Bleach on decorative finishes: Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is effective on plain grey concrete for mould and algae, but on pigmented spray-on or stencil finishes it can cause uneven bleaching of the pigment and accelerate sealer degradation. Use a pH-neutral algaecide or diluted white vinegar instead.
Petroleum-based solvents: Petrol, mineral turps or paint stripper will dissolve most concrete sealers. Avoid spills and clean up any that occur promptly with an absorbent material, not a spreading wipe.
Signs it is time to book a professional look
Some things are better assessed by someone standing on the slab than by a homeowner reading a checklist.
Call a professional when you see:
- A crack that has appeared or widened between inspections, especially one with vertical displacement
- Delamination or bubbling of the overlay itself (not just the sealer)
- Any section where the slab feels hollow underfoot when walked across (a sign of voiding under the slab)
