Refreshing Garden Paths and Concrete Areas Around Your Central Coast Home

Concrete garden paths are the forgotten surface in most home maintenance plans. The driveway gets attention, the entertainment area gets a thought, but the side path to the back yard, the strip between the garden beds, and the concrete around the clothesline are ignored until someone trips on them. On the Central Coast, where coastal moisture and salt air combine with abundant organic growth, paths deteriorate faster than most homeowners expect.

The good news: path resurfacing is typically the cheapest concrete work on the property, small areas, straightforward preparation, and modest labour time mean refreshed paths cost far less than you’d assume.


Why Garden Paths Fail

Tree Roots

The number one cause of path failure across the Central Coast is tree root infiltration. Garden paths run through planted areas, exactly where root systems spread. A concrete path over a fibrous root will simply lift as the root grows beneath it. The Central Coast’s warm, wet climate supports vigorous tree growth, meaning this problem develops faster here than in drier parts of NSW.

Thin Sections and No Subbase

Garden paths are often poured thin, 75 mm or less, on an unprepared subbase (straight onto garden soil). This is adequate when the subbase is stable but fails relatively quickly when soil settles, wets and dries, or roots move beneath. Thin paths also crack more easily.

Biological Growth

Shaded paths on the Central Coast develop green algae and moss within 1-2 growing seasons if unsealed. These organisms not only look bad but create significant slip hazards on wet mornings or after rain. A path that’s slippery in wet conditions is a liability risk, particularly if it serves an access route to the home.

Poor Drainage and Ponding

Paths beside garden beds frequently end up at or below bed level as the garden is built up over time. When the path sits lower than the surrounding soil, it becomes the drainage channel, constantly wet, growing algae and moss, and subject to the freeze-thaw cycling that (even in Central Coast winters) can stress the surface.

Thermal Cracking

Paths in exposed positions, particularly running east-west and exposed to full afternoon sun, experience significant temperature cycling. In summer, a dark concrete path can reach 60°C in full sun; by evening it’s back to ambient temperature. This repeated thermal expansion and contraction, over years, produces fine cracking patterns.


Resurfacing vs. Replacing Garden Paths

For most garden paths in reasonable structural condition, resurfacing is clearly better than replacement. The comparison:

The one situation where path replacement is clearly better than resurfacing is where tree roots have lifted sections so much that sections are displaced by more than 20 mm vertically. At that point, the subbase needs to be rebuilt and the path re-poured anyway.


Path Resurfacing Options for Garden Areas

Spray-On Concrete Overlay

The standard choice for garden paths. A thin polymer-modified overlay (3-5 mm) applied over the existing path after cleaning and preparation. Can be coloured and textured. Works well for paths up to 1.2 m wide.

Best for: Side paths, back yard access paths, clothesline surrounds, shed approaches.

Cost: $50 to $75 per m² (minimum charges typically apply for small areas)

Grind and Reseal

If the path concrete is in good structural condition but is stained, pitted, or has lost its sealer, diamond grinding and resealing is the most cost-effective option. No overlay is applied, the existing concrete is revealed, cleaned, and sealed.

Best for: Paths with good concrete structure but cosmetic deterioration.

Cost: $25 to $40 per m²

Decorative Overlay with Stencil

For paths that serve as design features of the garden, a formal approach path, garden room access, pool garden path, a stencil overlay can create an attractive patterned surface resembling natural stone or pavers.

Best for: Feature paths, formal gardens, paths connecting entertainment areas.

Cost: $70 to $110 per m²

Exposed Aggregate

A natural-looking path option where decorative aggregate is exposed in the overlay. Provides inherent slip resistance. Particularly popular for bush garden settings where a natural material look fits the landscape.

Best for: Bush gardens, nature-style landscaping, steep sloping paths where slip resistance is a priority.

Cost: $80 to $120 per m²


Non-Slip Requirements for Garden Paths

Any path used as an access route, especially paths connecting the street to the home or the home to a pool, should meet slip resistance Class P4 or P5 under AS 4586 in wet conditions. Paths in shaded, moist positions (common in Central Coast gardens with established tree canopy) are permanently at risk of being wet and must have sufficient surface texture.

Key principles for path slip resistance:

  • Broom-textured or exposed aggregate surfaces achieve P4, P5 naturally
  • Smooth trowelled finishes in outdoor locations require a non-slip additive to reach P3 minimum
  • Paths adjacent to pools must meet P5 (PTV ≥ 45 wet) under pool safety standards
  • Sloped paths steeper than 1:14 must have additional texture measures

Drainage and Falls on Garden Paths

A path should always drain away from the building and away from any points where water pooling would be a problem. The standard crossfall for a path is 1-2% (1-2 cm fall per 1 m of path width). When a path runs alongside a house wall, it must fall away from the wall (minimum 25 mm fall over the path width, regardless of path width).

When resurfacing a path, the overlay can be used to correct minor drainage deficiencies, building up one edge slightly to create the correct fall. This is one of the underappreciated benefits of resurfacing over simply sealing: the additional overlay layer can correct drainage geometry that the original pour got wrong. Tree Roots, What to Do Before Resurfacing

If your path is lifted by tree roots, the roots must be addressed before resurfacing. Options:

  1. Root pruning and path resurfacing: The roots immediately below the path are cut, the path is levelled and resurfaced. This works if the tree has sufficient root mass elsewhere to survive the pruning, a qualified arborist should assess before cutting major roots. This is a permanent fix only if the tree is subsequently removed or root barriers are installed to prevent re-growth beneath the path.

  2. Root barriers: A physical barrier (HDPE sheet at 800 mm depth minimum) is installed along the path edge to redirect future root growth away from the path. Then the existing path damage is repaired and resurfaced.

  3. Path re-routing: For garden paths, it’s sometimes simpler to re-route the path slightly to avoid an established root system rather than fighting it.

  4. Tree removal: In some cases, the tree is the problem and removing it is the correct long-term solution. This requires council approval for significant trees, check Central Coast Council’s tree removal requirements.


Small-Area Minimum Charges

For very small areas (under 15 m²), most contractors apply a minimum call-out charge that means the per-square-metre rate for a small section of path can be considerably higher than the headline rate. When pricing a path resurfacing job, ask specifically about the minimum charge and how it applies to your area.

For small paths, it’s often worth combining the work with another concrete job, sealing the driveway at the same time as a path resurfacing, for example, to spread the mobilisation cost across a larger area.

Garden paths should complement both the house colour scheme and the garden landscape.

Avoid very light colours on paths exposed to leaf litter and organic growth, they require more frequent cleaning to stay looking good in Central Coast gardens.


Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a path resurfacing project take? Most garden path jobs (20-50 m²) take 1-2 days for application, with the path available for light foot traffic at 24 hours and returning to full use at 48 hours.

Can you resurface a path that curves or has steps? Yes. Spray-on overlays are flexible in application and work around curves, corners, and step risers and treads. Steps are treated separately to ensure the non-slip standard is met on both the tread and the riser face.

The path near my pool gate is green and slippery, what’s the best fix? The slipperiness is from algae, which grows on any porous or improperly sealed surface. The fix is to clean the path, treat it with an anti-fungal solution, and apply an exposed aggregate or textured overlay with a polyurethane sealant. The non-slip rating will meet pool area requirements and the sealed surface dramatically reduces the rate of algae re-growth.

My path has some cracks, can these be resurfaced without repairing the cracks first? Minor non-moving cracks can be filled with flexible crack filler and then overlaid. If the cracks suggest movement (the two edges of the crack are at different levels, or the crack appears regularly), the underlying cause needs addressing before resurfacing or the crack will reappear through the overlay.

How often will a resurfaced path need resealing? In a Central Coast garden environment (shaded, some moisture), a polyurethane sealer will typically perform well for 4-6 years before resealing is needed. Signs that it’s time: water soaks in rather than beading; the surface looks dull and flat; algae is returning more quickly after cleaning.
