How each product actually colours the concrete
Acid stain, also called reactive stain or acid wash colouring, contains metallic salts that react chemically with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete surface. The reaction produces a colour that is physically part of the concrete matrix, not a layer sitting on top. Once the reaction has occurred and the surface is sealed, the colour cannot peel because it is not a film.
Concrete paint is a coating. It sits on the surface of the concrete and builds up as a film. The colour is in the paint film itself. The film is only as durable as its bond to the surface beneath it and its resistance to UV, water and abrasion above.

Acid stain maintenance is primarily about the sealer. The colour itself needs no maintenance. When the sealer starts to look dull or water no longer beads on the surface (a simple test you can do with a garden hose), it is time for a reseal.
