How flake epoxy is built up: base, broadcast and topcoat
A flake epoxy system is three distinct layers, each with a job. Understanding the layers helps when talking to a contractor about colour.
The base coat is a pigmented epoxy applied to the prepared slab. It is the background colour visible between the flakes: typically a medium grey, beige, tan or charcoal. The base coat bonds to the concrete and provides a sealed, uniform foundation.
The flake broadcast is vinyl colour chips scattered over the wet base coat before it cures. Chips are available in a wide range of sizes (commonly 1 mm to 4 mm) and hundreds of individual colours. Blends are pre-mixed combinations of chips from two to eight individual colours. A full broadcast, where chips cover the entire surface, produces a dense, uniform appearance. A partial broadcast leaves visible base coat colour between chips for a speckled effect.
The topcoat is a clear coat, typically polyaspartic or polyurethane, that locks the chips in place, provides UV stability and controls the surface sheen from matte to high gloss. Most suppliers group their blends into families. Within each family, the individual chip colours vary but the overall tone remains consistent. The most popular families on the Central Coast are:
- Grey and silver blends: mix of light, mid and dark grey chips, sometimes with a white or cream accent chip. The most neutral and most sold. Suit grey Colorbond, rendered homes and contemporary interiors.
- Tan and cream blends: warm neutral chips including beige, cream and light brown. Suit red brick homes and warmer interior palettes.
- Earth and brown blends: warm terracotta, brown and tan chips. Less common but work well in period or tradesman-style homes.
- Blue and charcoal blends: darker overall, with blue-grey or blue-black chips. Suit contemporary homes and garages with black window frames or dark cladding.
- Multi-colour blends: high contrast with five or more chip colours. Maximise hiding power; work in any home but are bold.

Which blends hide dust, tyre marks and oil drips best

Matching flake to interior tiles, cladding or bricks
A garage floor is visible through an open door or directly connected to a utility room or laundry. The floor colour matters in relation to what surrounds it.
A few practical guides:
- Red brick homes: tan, earth or brown-based flake blends read as complementary. Grey blends can feel cold against warm brick.
- Rendered white or grey homes: grey or silver blends are the natural match. A cream blend also works.
- Colorbond Ironstone or Monument cladding: charcoal or blue-grey flake blends suit the darker tone.
- Tiled laundry or internal floor connection: match the flake tone to the cooler or warmer of the tile, not the other way around.
The garage floor will be viewed mostly in artificial light. Natural light enters through the open door but does not cover the full floor evenly. If you have strong fluorescent or LED strip lighting in the garage, check how the sample looks under that light, not just in daylight outside.
UV and yellowing: what the topcoat controls
Standard epoxy resins yellow under UV exposure. In a closed garage, this is minimal. If your garage door is open for hours daily and sunlight tracks across the floor, standard epoxy topcoat will show yellowing at the exposed area within a few years.
A polyaspartic topcoat solves this. Polyaspartic is UV-stable and does not yellow, making it the preferred topcoat for garages with significant sun exposure and for any job where colour fidelity over time matters. The flake chips themselves are UV-stable in most products; the yellowing risk is in the clear binder between the chips, which is the topcoat. This means even on a high-quality flake job, the wrong topcoat will gradually yellow the appearance of the blend without the chips themselves changing colour.
Ordering samples before you commit
Do not choose a flake blend from a chip card or a digital photo. The same blend looks different at different scales. A 50 mm chip card shows the individual colours; a full floor shows how they blend at distance. At 1-2 metres of standing distance, most multi-colour blends read as a single mid-tone rather than as individual colours.
Ask your contractor for a cured sample tile or, better, for a reference site you can visit to see the blend installed on a full floor. Most professional installers will accommodate this for a significant job.
If you are undecided between two blends, ask whether a sample board can be prepared on a corner of your slab before the full job goes ahead. This is not always possible depending on the prep approach, but it is worth asking.

Does a darker blend hide more than a lighter one?
Not necessarily. A very dark blend shows dust and dried water spots clearly because the light contrast is high. A mid-tone blend in any colour family generally hides the most day-to-day grime. Will the flake colour fade over time?
The chips themselves are UV-stable in quality products. The topcoat binder can yellow if it is a standard epoxy rather than a polyaspartic. Can I add more flake on top of an existing flake floor later?
Not as a simple overlay. If the existing floor is well-bonded, a reseal of the topcoat can be done without adding more flake. Adding a new flake layer on top of an existing cured floor is not standard practice and requires full assessment of the existing bond.
